Trevor Harrelson assisted on one goal and scored another 3 minutes later as Cheney defeated visiting Deer Park/Riverside 3-0 in an opener for both.

Mike Kisslinger and Kanyon Anderson also scored for the Blackhawks. Cheney used the defense of John Montecucco, Nick Reynolds and Kapeli Odood to wear down Riverside on a field that was described as “a mudpit.”

In another opener, Chris Skidmore and Tory Swenson scored unassisted second-half goals to rally visiting East Valley to a 2-all tie with West Valley.

In both instances, WV failed to clear the ball. The Eagles led 2-0 after goals by Quinn Sharpe and Lenny Peterson. Sharpe had a 12-yard header on a pass from Jamie Scarcello, while Peterson took a feed after Jason Roberts dribbled past two defenders.

Also, Harouna Savada scored twice as visiting Pullman ruined Colville’s welcome to the league, 3-1. The Greyhounds had a 21-7 shots-on-goal edge.

Travis Lumpkin scored for Pullman near the end of the first half. Minutes into the second half, Colville’s Mark Mostek had a breakaway goal.

Coeur d’Alene High School quarterback Jason Rook has orally committed to attend Central Washington University.

The 5-foot-10, 170-pound Rook passed for 1,302 yards and 13 touchdowns and rushed for 453 yards and three TDs last fall as Coeur d’Alene qualified for the Idaho A-1 Division II playoffs.

By league rule, Rook can’t officially sign with CWU until May 1, CWU coach Jeff Zenisek said. Zenisek said CWU, currently an NAIA Division II school, plans to recruit more in Eastern Washington and North Idaho in the future as the school plans to apply for membership into NCAA Division II in June.
