Yakima Valley Storms Past North Idaho

Yakima Valley Community College scored five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning Saturday and beat North Idaho College 11-5 in a non-conference game at Yakima.
YVCC’s Jerry Wright struck out six in five innings.
NIC (6-4) opened the day with a 9-5 loss to Edmonds CC. The Cardinals play two more games in Yakima today.
NIC’s Jerud Martin had a home run against YVCC. Tritan Fike of the Cardinals had three hits on the day.
Senior catcher Andy Norton went 4 for 4 and stole home as Gonzaga University defeated Wyoming 9-4 at the Pepsi-Johnny Quik Classic in Fresno, Calif.
Norton drove in three runs and scored three runs as the Bulldogs improved to 3-3 at the tournament and 9-8 overall. The Cowboys are 2-4, 8-13.
Norton’s efforts backed the eighthit, complete-game pitching of Darin Blood (4-1). Blood struck out eight and walked two.
Billy Wark (2-0) pitched eight innings and Don O’Neal had a tworun double in the bottom of the eighth as Whitworth defeated Pacific Lutheran 4-2 during a 1-1 day at the University of Redlands (Calif.) tournament.
The host Bulldogs later defeated Whitworth 12-1.
Wark allowed seven hits. Jeff Tygart of Whitworth (5-2) pitched the ninth for his second save. The Pirates’ Chris Fukai was 3 for 3 during the win.
Community Colleges of Spokane’s game against Centralia was rained out. The teams scheduled a doubleheader at noon today at Spokane Falls CC.
