Man Convicted For Killing Official

Compiled From Wire Services

The man who fired the gun that killed a top official in Mexico’s ruling party has been sentenced to the maximum 50 years in prison.

Daniel Aguilar Trevino was sentenced Monday in the Sept. 28, 1994, assassination of Jose Francisco Ruiz Massieu, secretary-general of the Institutional Revolutionary Party, or PRI.

Six others convicted in connection with the murder outside a Mexico City hotel were sentenced to prison terms ranging from 37 to 50 years.

The killing was one of three highprofile assassinations that have rocked Mexico. Investigations into the other two - the March 1994 slaying of presidential candidate Luis Donaldo Colosio and the May 1993 killing of Cardinal Juan Jesus Posadas Ocampo - remain open.
