Shoot Some Wildlife During Break

Elizabeth Johnson Lewis And Clar

If you still haven’t decided what to do for spring break, here’s another suggestion: photography.

The Spokane Art School is holding a junior and senior high school “Photographing from Nature” course with Riverfront Park and the Spokane River as the subjects.

The classes are through the week of April 3. You can register for a onetime 2-hour class for $10, or all day for $25. Or sign up for four days of two-hour classes and pay $35.

You can get all the details by calling the art school at 328-0900.

Good people: On Tuesday, Spokane will honor young people who have contributed to their communities in ways you don’t always hear about. Through their creativity, their environmental concern, their courage.

The Chase Youth Awards ceremony is at 7 p.m. at the Spokane Opera House. Hundreds of youth were nominated for the eight categories. They deserve a hand.

Scholars gather: Speaking of awards, it’s time for the Third Annual Spokane Scholars Foundation Banquet, coming April 20.

Spokane Scholars is a non-profit organization founded three years ago. It honors academic excellence throughout Spokane County.

Teachers and counselors at each high school nominate their best senior in each of six categories: English, fine arts, science, social science, mathematics and foreign language. A committee examines the nominee’s grades, test scores, teacher recommendations, grade point and special recognition or awards received. Each winner gets $3,000.

The idea for Spokane Scholars came to attorney Louis Rukavina while he saw a TV news story praising the annual athletics awards banquet. He felt celebrating athletic achievement was inconsistent with the goal of emphasizing education.

The purpose of Spokane Scholars is to “award and motivate young people to do well.” About 650 people are expected to attend this year’s banquet, which will feature Dr. Leon Lederman, a 1988 Nobel Prize winner in physics.

If you’d like to applaud these local scholars and support their hard work, come to the banquet. Tickets are $16 and can be purchased from area high school senior counselors.
