Megan Troy Mead Year: Senior Sport: Track Event: Sprints
Annette Pedersen’s greatest fear entering track season was senioritis.
Megan Troy put that fear to rest early, winning the 200- and 400-meter sprints at the Banana Belt Relays in Clarkston last weekend.
“I was a little surprised,” said Pedersen, the Mead coach. “I was hoping she would run that well. It made me feel good. It means she’s in pretty good shape. Sometimes, when they get to be a senior, they kind of get tired of running.”
Troy surprised herself with a 26.75-second 200 meters and a 1:02.03 in the 400, but admitted, “I didn’t really train, except for when we started track.”
“She told me this year she wanted to concentrate on the 400,” Pedersen said. “I think she’s still really fast in the 100, but she has short legs. She is so strong, so determined.”
A soccer player who hopes to play at a junior college next year, Troy’s enthusiasm may have provided the early season boost.
“I guess I’m really excited for this year. I’ve been working hard at practice,” she said. “It’s my last chance. It’s my last sport in high school and I want to make the best of it. I like to see the younger kids out there and help push them.”
Watching Troy is a good idea. As a sophomore, she was the District 8 200 champion and ran leadoff for the state champion 1,600 relay team.
