Track Athletes Go It Alone With Teams Likely Out Of Title Hunts, Top Individuals Come To The Fore
It will be the year of the individual in North Idaho high school track.
No area teams figure to contend for state championships. But several athletes will contend for gold medals.
Most area teams open the season Saturday. Inland Empire League teams and a couple of Intermountain League teams will attend the Lewiston Invitational, while the smaller schools will participate in the Valley Christian Ice-Breaker at Central Valley.
Here’s a list of the major meets many of the area teams will compete in this spring: Post Falls Invitational (April 15); Sandpoint Invitational and Mooberry Relays (April 22); Lake City-Super 1 Invitational (April 29); Strandberg Invite and Priest River Invitational (May 6); Lakeland Relays (May 12); and North Star League meet (May 13 at Lakeland).
Here is how athletes qualify for state, which will be held May 26-27 at Boise State University:
IEL (A-1): The Region I meet will be May 19-20 at Lake City. The top two individuals and winning relay teams advance to state. The third-place mark in each individual event will be compared with similar marks from Region III (Pocatello area) for another berth to state.
IML (A-2): The District I-II meet will be May 20 at Lakeland. The top three individuals and winning relay teams advance to state. Other at-large berths to state also are up for grabs.
NSL (A-4): The District I-II meet will be May 19-20 at Lapwai. The top three individuals and top two relays advance to state.
Wallace (A-3 independent): The District I-II meet will be May 19-20 at Lapwai. The top three individuals and two relays advance to state.
