Tom Dolan of Michigan shattered the American record in the 500-yard freestyle by more than 2 seconds on the opening day of the NCAA men’s Division I swimming and diving championships.

Leading at every turn, the 1994 world champion in the 400-meter individual medley, won in 4:08.75. Defending champion Chad Carvin of Arizona, who set the former record of 4:11.59 last year, settled for second in 4:12.36.
