Rower Retrieves 1 Medal

Compiled From Wire Services

Canadian rower Silken Laumann was stripped of one Pan Am Games gold medal, but allowed to keep the other after testing positive for a stimulant that was in a cold medicine.

Mario Vasquez Rana, president of the Pan American Sports Organization, said the executive committee voted to withdraw the gold medal for the quadruple sculls, but would recommend Laumann receive the minimum sanctions from FISA, the international rowing federation.

Laumann will be allowed to keep her single sculls gold, won Saturday, because she did not test positive for ephedrine after that race. Laumann used Benadryl, which contains pseudoephedrine, to treat a cold. She also suffers from asthma.

Elsewhere, the American men (3-2) played their final round-robin basketball game, beating Mexico 104-80 without their most productive players in the meaningless game. The U.S. team plays Brazil (4-1) in the semifinals tonight.
