Source Says Southern Cal Will Retain Parker

Associated Press

Charlie Parker, the interim Southern Cal basketball coach, is set to get the permanent job, a source told The Associated Press Thursday.

The source, who is close to the situation and asked not to be identified, said the move likely is to be announced today at a news conference.

“There’s been talk the past few weeks that Charlie was going to get the job permanently,” the source said. “It’s not any great secret.”

Parker, an assistant to George Raveling for six years, became the interim coach when Raveling retired before the start of the 1994-95 season.

Parker, 46, guided the Trojans to seven wins in their first 14 games, but USC lost its final 14 games to finish the season with a 7-21 record.
