Dolan Sets Second Record
Tom Dolan of Michigan lowered an American and NCAA record for the second consecutive night as he won the 400-yard individual medley at the NCAA men’s Division I swimming and diving championships.
Dolan, the 1994 world champion in the 400-meter IM, set a short-course record of 3 minutes, 38.18 seconds. That was more than 2 seconds faster than the 3:40.64 records set by Greg Burgess last year. Dolan, who chopped 2.84 seconds off the American and U.S. Open record in the 500 freestyle Thursday, was second to teammate Royce Sharp after the backstroke segment of the race.
Dolan also anchored Michigan’s 800 freestyle relay team to victory after starting his leg of the race in third place. Dolan completed his 200 yards in 1.33.6, passing Stanford’s Scott Gagner with about 20 yards to go to win in 6:21.65 - a few ticks below the NCAA record of 6:21.29 set by Florida in 1984.
The Michigan Wolverines, who hope to end Stanford’s streak of three straight team titles when the meet at the Indiana University Natatorium ends today, have 407 points after the meet’s second day. Stanford was second at 341.
