Duke Talks Horses On TV

Winda Benedetti Staff Writer

It’s not often New York television talk show hosts use their forum to discuss Coeur d’Alene’s problem with horses running loose.

Unless they’re talking to actress and Coeur d’Alene resident Patty Duke.

Duke, star of the television show “Amazing Grace,” spent Thursday morning telling Regis Philbin and Kathie Lee Gifford how her horses up and ran away from home this week.

And they did it just days before her new TV show filmed right here in Coeur d’Alene - is set to air.

Kootenai County sheriff’s officials confirm that Duke’s four rogue horses spent Tuesday morning running amok in the Nettleton Gulch area.

“I chased them all over the place,” Deputy Ed Krause said with a laugh. “The bucket of grain is what finally did the trick.”

Deputy Krause and Cheryl Rhodes of Panhandle Equine Rescue spent two hours wrangling Duke’s mischievous horses.

Duke talked to the hosts about how much she enjoyed being able to work in Coeur d’Alene rather than give up her new hometown for New York or Los Angeles.

Duke was scheduled to fly into Spokane Thursday night. She’ll be able to pick up her horses at Panhandle Equine Rescue - for a fee.

It’ll be $5 a day for each horse.
