Portland State Overruns WSU

Area colleges

Portland State scored six times in the eighth inning Sunday to overcome a one-run lead and hand Washington State an 11-7 defeat in a Pac10 Conference North Division baseball game at Bailey Field in Pullman.

Jason Hendrickson (2-3), the third Vikings pitcher, picked up the win as PSU improved to 12-11 in league and 18-30 overall. For the Cougars (13-10, 23-25), the loss went to Mark Hendrickson (0-2).

WSU trails first-place Washington (13-9) by percentage points in the league standings. The Huskies lost a double-header to Oregon State, 2-1 and 9-2.

Portland State took advantage of a one-out, eighth-inning error by Washington State shortstop Mike Wetmore on the way to its decisive rally. Wayne Vezzetti relieved Mark Hendrickson but also failed to stop the PSU rally, giving up three consecutive hits before he was replaced by Todd Belitz.

Kyle Poffenroth pitched the first six innings for WSU. Hendrickson started the seventh.

WSU was led by Ken Cameron’s three hits. Rob Ryan had two.
