Asu Leading Pac-10 Golf
Arizona State’s Scott Johnson shot a 1-over-par 73 in the third round for a 210 total at the Pacific-10 Men’s Golf Championships Tuesday to hold a 2-stroke lead at Meadow Springs Country Club in Richland, Wash.
The third round was played in blustery weather that included misty rains early in the day and winds that gusted to 20 mph throughout.
Host Washington State jumped over pre-tourney favorite Stanford, turning in a team score of 379 in the third round. Max McCain was WSU’s individual leader with a three-round total of 222. Craig Looper had the top round for a Cougar Tuesday with a 72.
Arizona State led with a three-round score of 1,084, followed by Arizona (1,106), Cal (1,112), USC (1,112), Oregon (1,115), Washington State (1,117), Stanford (1,119), UCLA (1,124), Oregon State (1,125) and Washington (1,142).
Volleyball
University of Idaho standouts Mindy Rice and Brittany Van Haverbeke have been named to the United States Olympic Festival 1995 women’s volleyball team.
The 1995 Olympic Festival will take place July 21-30 in Denver.
Rice and Van Haverbeke are among 48 athletes who will make up the four teams in the festival. Idaho is one of 11 schools to have more than one athlete representative.
Baseball
Spokane dropped a pair of NWAACC games 12-6, 9-4 to host Yakima Valley.
Yakima scored ten runs in the first four innings of the first game and scored five runs in the seventh inning in the second game to pull away with the wins.
Shaun Walker led the Sasquatch (14-6, 16-10) with three hits in the first game.
Charlie Zimmerman picked up his first loss on the season in the first game and is (6-1).
Gonzaga University’s exhibition baseball game Tuesday at Pecarovich Field with the National Baseball Institute of Canada was postponed due to rain.
The teams will play a single game today at 4 p.m. at Pecarovich.
GU right-hander Darin Blood has been named the Pacific-10 Conference North pitcher of the week for hurling the Zags to a 9-2 win over Portland in the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader. He scattered five hits, allowed two runs, one earned run, walked one and fanned 14.
Basketball
Two local prep athletes and one from the West Side have signed letters of intent to play basketball for the Community Colleges of Spokane women’s basketball team.
Shannon Zahrowski and Gena Greenside of Rogers High signed to play for CCS coach Bruce Jonhson’s 1995-96 team. Zahrowski will most likely play point guard with Greenside scheduled to be a forward.
Johnson also signed forward Taneha Jackson of Spanaway Lake in Tacoma. Jackson was a first team All-Metro League selection and averaged 18 points a game.
