Backup Umpire Meets Early End
National League
Terry Bovey’s job as a replacement umpire ended a few innings early Tuesday night.
Bovey, 46, left the Pittsburgh-St. Louis game in the fourth inning with a torn right calf muscle. A three-man crew finished the game.
The regular umpires are back on the job today after settling on a five-year contract on Monday. Replacement umpires worked the first eight days of the season.
Bovey, of Tucson, Ariz., is a league supervisor of umpires in Arizona and works junior college and college games.
Marlins stand pat
Florida Marlins general manager Dave Dombrowski said he has no regrets about rejecting two trade offers for Bryan Harvey since the fragile pitcher’s last healthy season in 1993.
“Sitting in our shoes, I don’t second-guess it,” Dombrowski said. “There are some things in this world you do not control.”
The Marlins learned Monday that Harvey will miss the rest of the season with a torn ligament in his pitching elbow. Today, the 31-year-old reliever is scheduled to undergo reconstructive surgery - his third elbow operation in four years.
Huge deal completed
Left-handed pitcher Sean Fesh was sent to San Diego by Houston to complete their 12 player-swap.
In the deal, made in December, the Astros sent infielders Ken Caminiti, Andujar Cedeno and Robert Petagine, outfielder Steve Finley, pitcher Brian Williams and a player to be named to the Padres. The Padres sent outfielders Derek Bell, Phil Plantier, infielders Craig Shipley and Ricky Gutierrez and pitchers Doug Brocail and Pedro Martinez to the Astros.
Fesh, 22, was with the Astros AAA team in Tucson this year. The Bethel, Conn., native was 1-0 with a 1.35 ERA and no saves in 10 appearances with the Toros.
