Canada scored twice within 50 seconds in the first period and went on to beat the United States 4-1 in the quarterfinals of the World Hockey Championships.

Canada, which finished last in its preliminary group while the United States won the other with an unbeaten record, will play Olympic champion Sweden in the semifinals Friday.

The Czech Republic, which defeated Russia 2-0 in the other quarterfinal, meets Finland in the other semifinal.

Paul Stanton, formerly of the Pittsburgh Penguins, scored for the U.S. in the third period.
