Math, Science Olympiad Winners Announced

The MESA middle school Math and Science Olympiad was recently held. In team scores, Chase Middle School took first with 33 points, Garry earned second with 32 points, Salk third with 31 points, Shaw fourth with 29 points, and Glover fifth with 25 points.

Following are the categories and individual students’ awards:

Airplane accuracy: Edgar Muniz, Shaw, first; Jovan Torres, Glover, second; and Brandon Comer, Shaw, third.

Airplane hang time: Tou Vue, Shaw, first; Barry Warren, Shaw, second; and Jennifer Duxbury, Garry, third.

Balloon racers (distance): Brian Herrington, Garry, first; Seneca Landrie, Garry, second; and DJ Bordner, Chase, third.

Balloon racers (speed): Andrea Krise, Chase, first; Amber Derkoop, Chase, second; and Andrea Trautman, Shaw, third.

Catapults: Nadia Gorkovchenko and Brooke Reese, Garry, first; Allyn Abad and Jimmy Lo, Salk, second; and Dennis Evans and Bill Wang, Chase third.

Egg crates: Angela Coldsnow and Becky Fuller, Garry first; Danielle Denny and Katrina Kelly, Salk, second; and Emily Burda and Alma Rejon, Salk, third.

Nine-man Morris: McKell Curtis, first; Allyn Abad, second; and Jimmy Lo, third; all of Salk.

Pentominos: Heather Bowen and Cindy Brotherton, Glover, first; Brandi Johnson and Lania Jones, Salk, second; and Jovan Canton and Jessica Stergeon, Chase, third.

Spatial Visualization: Robert Rollner and Bill Wang, Chase, first; Samantha Knight and Christine Winkfield, Shaw, second; and Matt Bogue and Katrina Kelly, Salk, third.

Tangrams: Jessica Perham and Barby Valentine, Glover, first; Jessica Lehinger and Shin Kim, Chase, second; and Kristy Aleto and Lissette Terry, Glover, third.

Shelly Bartlett, Spokane, was recently recognized as a High Scholar for having been on the honor lists each year since she was a freshman. She is a senior at the University of Nebraska Lincoln Teacher’s College.

Sean Merritt, a senior at North Central High School, has received a College Heights Foundation scholarship to attend Western Kentucky University. He is the son of Alex Merritt, Spokane.
