Sunshine Reports First-Quarter Loss

From Staff And Wire Reports

Sunshine Mining & Refining Co. Friday recorded a loss for the first quarter of this year after earning money in the same period of 1994.

The Boise-based company that runs the Sunshine Mine in Big Creek, Idaho, lost $3.6 million in the first quarter of 1995. That compares with a profit of $3.2 million in the first quarter of 1994.

The company blamed the loss on reduced ore grade at the Sunshine mine and other factors that cut production.

Exploration expenses increased by $713,000 in the quarter from the previous year as Sunshine continued to drill in the West Chance portion of the mine. The company also is developing sites in Colorado, Argentina and Peru.

With silver prices continuing to improve, the mine could employ more workers if the West Chance proves to be as promising as early drilling has indicated.
