Swedes, Finns Advance
Olympic champion Sweden edged Canada 3-2 in overtime and Finland shut out the Czech Republic 3-0, setting up a dream final Sunday between the Nordic archrivals in the World Hockey Championships.
Rookie Daniel Alfredsson was the Swedes’ big hero, beating goalie Corey Hirsch with a one-timer from close range at 8:17 in overtime for the game-winner against the defending champions.
Sweden, which beat Canada in a penalty shootout in the Olympic final last year after the teams had tied 2-2 in regulation, has won six world titles since 1920 but never on home ice.
Sweden has dominated international hockey in the 1990s with two world titles (1991 and ‘92), two silver medals (1990 and ‘93) and one bronze medal (1994) in addition to last year’s Olympic gold.
