Talk To Test Interest In Historical Society

From Staff Reports

Silver Valley residents tend to take their vivid mining heritage for granted. Even history buffs admit that local preservation efforts have been spotty.

“I don’t believe the Shoshone County Historical Society has met since the late ‘70s,” said John Amonson, director of the Wallace District Mining Museum. Yet, he fields inquiries from fascinated outsiders every day.

Monday, Amonson will test the waters for local interest once more. His presentation to the Wallace Rotary Club - open to the public - deals mainly with collecting oral histories. But he hopes anyone interested in capturing the past will attend.

The presentation will take place at the Wallace Elks Lodge, beginning about 6:45 p.m., after the regular Rotary meeting. Depending on attendance, the event could lead to a revival of the historical society.

“The Delta School is a one-room schoolhouse on the other side of Dobson Pass. It hasn’t fallen down yet, but it’s on the way. With enough interest, it could be preserved. That’s just one example of the kind of opportunity that’s out there,” Amonson said.
