Chang Outlasts Agassi
Michael Chang prevailed against the world’s No. 1 player in a demanding test on clay in Duluth, Ga., beating Andre Agassi 6-2, 6-7 (6-8), 6-4 to win the $328,000 AT&T Challenge for the second straight year.
After the two exchanged service breaks in the first two games of the final set, Agassi appeared the fresher player, nailing several winners off weak shots by Chang.
But the last of several momentum changes came at 4-4. With Agassi serving at deuce, Chang moved in for a short ball and deftly touched a drop shot over the net. On the next point, Chang again won with a drop shot, gaining the break.
Serving for the match, Chang worked it to 40-30 and then watched as Agassi’s backhand return sailed just wide.
Wayne Ferreira won his second title of the year by beating good friend and occasional doubles partner Michael Stich 7-5, 7-6 (8-6) in Munich, Germany, in the final of the BMW Open.
