Finland World Champs

Ville Peltonen scored a hat trick, leading Finland to a 4-1 victory over arch rival Sweden in the final of the World Hockey Championships in Stockholm, Sweden.

It was Finland’s first gold medal in a major hockey championship. In the two previous final appearances, Finland lost to Sweden in 1992 and to Canada last year.

The Kamloops Blazers defeated the Brandon Wheat Kings 5-4 in overtime to win the Western Hockey League championship series 4-2 in Kamloops, British Columbia, and advance to the Memorial Cup.
