Bloomsday Winners Ran World-Record Times

The way Kenyans Josphat Machuka and Delillah Asiago burned the 12-kilometer Bloomsday course in Spokane Sunday morning, the question “world records?” naturally popped up.

It appears that they are.

Don Kardong, who puts together the elite field for the 7.46-mile race, called the Road Running Information Center in Santa Barbara, Calif., immediately after the run to find out, but it was closed.

That left the 33-minute, 41-second run by Machuka and the 38:19 by Asiago to stand as course records. Machuka eclipsed the old mark by 14 seconds, Asiago by 26 seconds.

On Monday, Kardong was told Asiago sliced 16 seconds off the 12K record established by Ingrid Christianson of Norway.

Machuka ran 12K one second faster than Kenyan Ismail Kirui. Because the record is so close, Machuka’s time still must be verified as a world record.
