S-R Reporters Win Idaho Awards

Spokesman-Review reporters were among winners in the 1994 Idaho Press Club Awards announced recently in Sun Valley.

Susan Drumheller took first place in the Spot News category for her story headlined, “Man shoots ex-girlfriend, kills himself.”

Kevin Keating took third place in that category for “Passers-by rescue man.”

Another first-place winner was Craig Welch in the Light Feature category. Welch won for his description of idle teenagers in “No place of their own.”

Steve Massey placed third in the Serious Feature category with his profile on anti-tax activist Ron Rankin, headlined “The Holy War of Ron Rankin.”

Susan Drumheller and Dean Miller placed second in the Series category for their coverage of Proposition 1, the citizens initiative to limit homosexual rights.

Business writer and former intern Eric Torbenson took second in the Rookie-of-the-Year contest.

D.F. Oliveria placed second in the Editorial category for his opinion of the U.S. Department of Justice in “Let the Sun Shine on Ruby Ridge.”
