Preakness Field Grows

Compiled From Wire Services

The field for the Preakness Stakes grew to 12 with the addition of Star Standard and Pana Brass.

Trainer Nick Zito, whose Go for Gin finished second in last year’s Preakness, will bring Star Standard to Saturday’s race. Trainer Alfredo Callejas, who was third with El Bakan in the 1993 Preakness, expects to enter Pana Brass.

Star Standard, son of 1988 Preakness winner Risen Star, won the Lexington Stakes at Keeneland on April 23. Zito decided to enter him after a blistering workout of 59 1/5 for 5 furlongs at Belmont Park on Saturday.

Star Standard is owned by William Condren and Joseph Cornacchia, who also own Kentucky Derby winners Go for Gin and Strike the Gold. Pana Brass has never run in the United States, but has three wins in five starts in Panama.

Kentucky Derby pacesetter Serena’s Song won’t be running in the Preakness. Dallas Stewart, assistant to trainer D. Wayne Lukas, confirmed that she will face other fillies in Friday’s $200,000 BlackEyed Susan Stakes also at Pimlico.
