S-R Wins Four Journalism Awards
The Spokesman-Review collared four awards in the 1994 Best of the West journalism contest, which drew more than 1,800 entries from 13 Western states.
The honors include first places for environmental reporting and graphic illustration, and second places for column writing and informational graphics.
Reporters Jim Lynch and Karen Dorn Steele won the top environmental award for an expose of government waste and mismanagement at Hanford Nuclear Reservation.
“Penetrating the DOE (Department of Energy) can be extremely difficult, but Lynch and Steele make it look easy,” the judge wrote.
The Hanford package previously won two national awards as well as regional honors.
Graphic artist Charles Waltmire won the top illustration award for his drawing of Fidel Castro’s head being held up by a dozen tiny citizens for a story about Cuba on the edge.
Outdoors writer Rich Landers won second place for his columns.
Graphic artist Warren Huskey won second place for his full-page informational graphic that illustrated the Hanford series.
