Tucker Urdahl: Cheney Year: Soph. Sport: Baseball Position: P/1b
Cheney pitcher and first baseman Tucker Urdahl is this week’s selection as the boy athlete of the week. But the truth is, the entire Blackhawks baseball team could have its faces in the spot where Urdahl’s mug appears.
“Our team has molded real well together,” Urdahl said. “Unlike some other teams I’ve played on before, we get along with each other on and off the field.”
Cheney coach Terry Regnier couldn’t agree more.
“This team doesn’t care about their stats… . The only thing they’re concerned about is winning,” Regnier said.
But Regnier and the Blackhawks do owe thanks to the 6-foot-1, 165-pound Urdahl for their winning ways.
The left-hander pitched a nohitter this year and also teamed with three other pitchers in another no-hit effort.
In two Cheney victories against East Valley Saturday in the Frontier League district championship, Urdahl batted 4 for 4 and walked twice. The wins gave Cheney the Frontier League’s berth to the regional playoffs.
“We’re happy to be playing this weekend, but we really want to be playing at state the weekend after that,” Urdahl said.
If he and the rest of the Blackhawks keep this up, they just might be doing that.
