Dollar Ends Day Mixed
The dollar seesawed against most major currencies Thursday, losing most of its early morning gains to a broad market sell-off.
The U.S. currency soared to an 11-week high against the German mark after German Foreign Minister and Vice Chancellor Klaus Kinkel announced he would resign as the chairman of the Free Democratic Party.
But the dollar’s gains quickly eroded after the market realized that the move would not threaten the stability of the government, analysts said.
In late New York trading, the dollar was quoted at 1.4398 marks, down from 1.4465 late Wednesday. It was also changing hands in New York at 86.93 Japanese yen, up from 86.85.
