Brazilians Protest Privatization

Compiled From Wire Services

Protesters angry about the privatization of state-run companies hurled rocks at a bus carrying President Fernando Henrique Cardoso, breaking three windows and injuring two staffers. Cardoso was unhurt.

Cardoso was traveling in Brazil’s poor, drought-stricken northeastern region Friday when hundreds of protesters surrounded two presidential buses in Campina Grande, 1,500 miles northeast of Rio, and began throwing rocks.

A presidential secretary and military aide traveling in Cardoso’s bus were cut by broken glass.

State troopers broke up the crowd, freeing the buses to head to the town’s airport.
