Relays Carry Riverside Girls To District 7-A Track And Field Title

Melanie Erickson, Sadie Heilman and Riverside’s relay teams led the Rams to the District 7-A girls track and field title Saturday at Central Valley.
Erickson won the 100-meter run in 12.61 seconds and Heilman took the 100 hurdles in 15.63. Riverside also won the 400 (51.5) and 800 (1:51.56) relays.
The Rams scored 177 points, easily outdistancing runner-up Chewelah’s 104. Thirdplace Colfax scored 93.
Chewelah’s Hayden Kristianson won the 400 in 58.39 and the 800 in 2:20.86.
Laura Widman of Colfax, who won the long jump and high jump on Friday, added a win in the 200 (26.57).
Medical Lake’s Amie Poteet won the 1,600 in 5:30.35. Poteet took the 3,200 on Friday.
Newport edged Riverside 127-123 for the boys title, despite a lack of champions. Justin Myers, with a 6-foot, 5-inch high jump, was the Grizzlies’ lone winner.
Riverside’s David Yonkers swept the hurdles, with a 14.56 in the 110 highs and 39.92 in the 300 lows. The Rams also won the 400 (43.62) and 1,600 (3:31.92) relays.
Greg Rainer of third-place Chewelah added a discus title to the javelin title he won Friday. Rainer threw 150-9 1/2.
Jason Quimby of Lakeside won the 200 in 22.69 and the 400 in 50.79.
District 9-B
Tricia Lamb set meet records in the triple jump and 100 hurdles as St. John-Endicott, the defending State B champions, edged DeSales 100-97 for the girls team title at Washington State University.
Lamb triple jumped 35-8 to break the old record of 34-11. Her 15.0 in the 100 hurdles shattered the old mark by a half-second.
Karen Kile of SJE, the defending state 3,200 champion, won that event in 12:38.6 and the 1,600 in 5:44.3. The Eagles’ Andee Schmick won the long jump (16-6 1/2) while Mandy Miller took the shot put (32-10 3/4).
Melissa Simmons of Dayton won the 100 (12.7) and 200 (26.1). DeSales’ Sarah Levens won the 400 (59.9) and 800 (2:28.5).
Defending State B champion Dayton outscored DeSales 85.5-76 for the boys title.
Ryan Rundell guided Dayton by winning the 100 (11.1), 200 (23.1) and 400 (50.8).
SJE’s Heath Barnes-Bailey won the javelin in 186-9. Beau Hilty-Jones of GarfieldPalouse and Will Hutchens of Dayton both high jumped 6-0, but Hilty-Jones took first.
AAA tennis
Mead’s boys doubles team, Ferris’ girls doubles team and Leslie Whitten of University won championships at the Region IV-AAA tournament at Kamiakin High.
The champions joined Mead’s Amy Fong, Lewis and Clark’s Spencer Piston and Mead’s No. 2 boys double teams as the Greater Spokane League’s qualifiers to the Friday-Saturday state tournament in Spokane.
The GSL and the Big Nine Conference evenly split the 12 available state berths.
Whitten, seeded second behind Fong from the GSL, defeated Joelle Standinger of Davis 6-1, 6-4 for the girls singles title.
Mead’s No. 1 boys doubles team of John Wrigley and Eric Donovan won its title match 7-5, 7-6 (7-4).
Darcy Ruemping and K.C. Richards of Ferris won their girls doubles title match 6-3, 7-6 (7-4).
Fong won her match for third place 6-3, 6-1. Piston was a 6-4, 6-3 winner in his thirdplace match.
Mike Foiles and Brett Kaiser, the other Mead doubles team to advance, won their third-place match 6-4, 1-6, 6-3.
