Juarez Takes Norba Cross-Country

Tinker Juarez held off Ned Overend by 1.06 seconds in a battle of favorites Sunday, winning the professional elite men’s cross-country mountain bike race Sunday on Mt. Spokane.

Juarez, of Bellflower, Calif., capped the fourday Jeep/NORBA Nationals by finishing in 2 hours, 30 minutes and 20.93 seconds. He and Overend, of Durango, Colo., averaged 15.6 mph around the 5.5-mile course. Of the 79 competitors, only two hail from Washington, with Tacoma’s Dale Knapp finishing ninth.

Don Myrah of Saratoga, Calif., was also considered a favorite heading into the season’s first event, but slipped to eighth place with a 2:33:57.91 showing.

Juarez earned 60 points for Sunday’s win, taking a five-point edge over Overend in the cross-country series points standing.

Rishi Grewel of Carbondale, Colo., finished third - 1 minute, 44.20 seconds back. He earned 51 points.

John Tomac, third in Saturday’s downhill, did not compete. He is recovering from an intestinal infection.

Reigning world champion Alison Sydor of Vancouver, British Columbia, won the 35-rider women’s cross-country in 1:56:14.32 - edging Ruth Matthes of Durango by .37 seconds.
