Mayor Re-Elected Despite Jail Term
Fresh out of jail, Republican Mayor Russell Holland was reelected to a third term Saturday.
The voters, he said, held “no grudge at all” over his guilty plea for cashing a $28 check written to his town.
Holland received 1,032 votes, or 76 percent, to 371 votes, or 24 percent, for George Vaughan.
The mayor spent 22 days in jail last month for cashing the check that a funeral home wrote for the purchase of two U.S. flags. Holland said he cashed the check at the Water Department and held the money for a weekend before turning it in to the town secretary.
Mason County Prosecutor Damon Morgan said it wasn’t an isolated incident.
