Spokane Man Accused Of Attacking Police

From Staff And Wire Reports

A Spokane man was arrested Saturday night for allegedly attacking police officers and carrying a concealed weapon in Riverfront Park.

Vincent X. Smith, 20, 1208 E. Empire, was being held Sunday night in the Spokane County Jail. No bond had been set.

Police were dealing with several disorderly groups near the Carrousel after 11 p.m. Saturday when a man shouted at officers that he had a right to stay wherever he wanted.

He shoved and struck a woman blocking his path and charged toward several officers. One of them told him he was under arrest, and the man began fighting, police said.

The man allegedly hit several officers before being handcuffed.

Police said they found a loaded .38-caliber revolver and five rounds concealed in the man’s coat.Smith was arrested about 11:20 p.m.

Police handled several other fights and assaults Saturday night in the park after the Lilac Festival Armed Forces Torchlight Parade. Most of them involved gang members or gang “wannabes,” police said.

Because the incidents have increased in number and severity over the past few years, police said they may increase security in the future.
