Atlantans Told To Park

Compiled From Wire Services

Car-loving Atlanta was challenged to make the ultimate Olympic sacrifice: Give up driving during the 17 days of the Summer Games.

The traffic plan for the 1996 Olympics will close much of downtown to private vehicles. Access to Olympic venues will be primarily through mass transit, including rapid rail and a fleet of buses.

Expecting 2 million visitors, the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games proposed that most major streets in the city be fully or partly closed to incoming traffic from 7:30 a.m. to midnight from July 19 to Aug. 4, 1996. ACOG urged businesses to give employees time off or juggle hours so workers could arrive before the driving deadline.
