Racist Fliers Investigated

From Staff And Wire Reports

Police and federal investigators want to know who’s been putting racist fliers in mailboxes outside homes in the Cougar Mountain area.

The crudely printed one-page circulars liken blacks to apes and urge readers, “Fight the subhuman species!” The sheets list an East Peoria, Ill., post-office box.

Police have collected 45 to 50 fliers that were placed in mailboxes and newspaper boxes Sunday and Monday morning, city spokeswoman Susan Wineke said.

“It’s outrageous stuff. It’s like the 1930s or the 1850s,” she said.

Federal postal authorities were called in because it

is a federal crime to place items without postage in a mailbox. And the FBI has been asked to help trace the source of the material.
