Softball: Capital, last year’s winner, is paired against Peninsula in a 10 a.m. opener and could be the second-round foe of Frontier League champion West Valley (17-2). The Eagles face Lindbergh at 10 a.m. A win would put them in a 4:30 game. East Valley (15-8) opens at noon against Shelton. Potential second-round opponents are Washington or Hanford. Teams losing in the first round play a 2:30 game. The tournament is at the South End Recreation Area.
Soccer: Defending state champion Mount Vernon was knocked out by Shorecrest (17-1) last weekend. Shorecrest meets Highline (16-3) in the first game at Sparks Stadium in Puyallup. In the nightcap, Mt. Rainier (18-1-1) plays West Valley-Yakima (20-1).
Tennis: Lakeside of Seattle swept the tennis titles last year and is favored to do so again, with a strong challenge from Seattle Prep. Jeff Richer of Prep beat Brian Moss of Lakeside in the finals last year and they are seed 1-2. Joel Scruggs of East Valley would meet Eicher in the second round if he gets past his Gig Harbor opponent. In girls singles, Lara Botts of Mount Rainer, second a year ago, is seeded No. 2 behind teammate Courtney Perkins. Botts is a potential second-round opponent for Jo Pierce of Cheney. Pierce faces a player from Holy Names. Meaghan Gould and Theresa Wagner of Lakeside earned the No. 1 seed in girls double after finishing second last year. Nancy Hundrup and Barb Norquist of East Valley face a team from Sedro Woolley. Mike Stratton and Mark Frazier of Pullman represent the FL in boys doubles.
