A/B Springfest
What: Championships for spring sports in Class A and Class B, except golf, which has already been completed, and fastpitch softball, which is combined with Class AA and is in Tacoma.
Where: Various sites in Yakima.
When: Friday and Saturday.
Tickets: Each event has day ($4 & $6) and all-tournament ($6 & $10) tickets available at the event.
Track: At Zaepful Stadium, the Cashmere boys and Cascade girls are the defending A champions; the Dayton boys and St. John-Endicott girls seek a repeat in the B’s. Running finals on Friday are the girls 3,200 and boys 1,600. First-day field event finals are A boys pole vault, shot put, javelin, high jump, triple jump; B boys high jump, shot put, triple jump, javelin; A girls javelin, triple jump, shot put; and B girls triple jump, javelin, shot put.
Baseball: DeSales (23-0) returns to defend its title in the B tournament at Yakima County Stadium. The Irish face Adna in a 10 a.m. game Friday. The other B opener is LaCrosse-Washtucna against Kittitas at 4. In the A tournament, Rochester meets Cashmere at 1 p.m. and Stevenson faces Kiona-Benton at 7.
Softball:Both defending champions return for the slowpitch tournaments at Larson Park, Lynden Christian in Class A and DeSales in Class B. In the B tournament, Northwest Christian meets DeSales in the first round at 10 a.m. Other first-round games include Selkirk vs. Wahluke and Springdale vs. Cascade Christian at 8 a.m.; and Garfield-Palouse vs. Davenport at 10.
Tennis: Lakeside girls and Cascade (Leavenworth) boys won team titles last year. Defending champion Connie Kirkendall and Elizabeth Hille of Ritzville are top-seeded in girls doubles. They have a 47-2 record over the past two years, both losses coming to a Class AAA team.
The Odessa team of Nicole Melcher and Marci Smith has lost to Kirkendall-Hille two years in a row at district but finished third at state last year and is seeded second. Julie Calkins of Wilbur-Creston was the first B player to win the district singles title and was seeded fourth for state. Lind’s Brian and Chris Keltz are seeded third in boys doubles. Robert Haugen of Medical Lake is at state for the third straight year, finishing sixth and fifth in singles the last two years. This year he’s in doubles with Matt John. League champion Lakeside and district champ Medical Lake could be in contention for the boys title.
