Armed Pair Rob Gas Station In/Around: Emerson-Garfield, West Central, Hillyard
Two men robbed a North Side gas station last week and escaped with an unknown amount of cash, police said.
The holdup occurred just before midnight May 17 at the Texaco MiniMart, 2202 N. Monroe. The men walked into the store, showed the clerk a handgun and demanded money.
They were described as Hispanic, between 18 and 25 years old, with blue bandanas on their heads. Both had mustaches.
One was about 5-foot-10 and heavy, the other about 5-foot-6 and thin.
The clerk was not injured.
Burglars break into church
Burglars broke into St. Joseph Catholic Church last weekend but did not take anything, police said.
The break-in occurred sometime Friday night.
The burglars smashed a window by the entrance to the church at 1517 W. Dean. A storage shed next to the building was used to reach the window.
Police said church officials didn’t report anything missing, but discovered damage to a locked storage room door that the burglars may have tried to enter.
Hitchhiker robbed
A 23-year-old man was robbed by three people from whom he accepted a ride last week, sheriff’s deputies said.
The victim was walking near Greene and Market shortly after 10 p.m. last Thursday when two males and a female offered him a ride.
The car stopped along the 5800 block of North Havana, and the victim was punched by both males. They took his wallet, which had a small amount of cash inside, deputies said.
The victim escaped without further injury and ran from the car, which he described as large and brown.
The men who punched him were white, between 18 and 20 years old and had brown hair.
