Dollar Ends Mostly Lower

The dollar ended mostly lower Wednesday after a weaker-thanexpected economic report raised the prospect that the Federal Reserve may lower interest rates.

The Commerce Department reported that orders to factories for big-ticket durable goods plunged 4 percent in April, the third straight decline and the biggest drop in more than three years.

The report was further evidence that the economy is slowing down, which may cause the Fed to refrain from raising interest rates any more and perhaps even lower them, analysts said.

In late New York trading, the dollar was quoted at 87.23 Japanese yen, up from 87.16 late Tuesday.
