Highway 2 Work Delayed
The Idaho Transportation Department has decided to delay reconstruction of a section of U.S. Highway 2, citing public safety concerns.
A portion of the highway from Dover to Wrenco Loop, just west of Sandpoint, was supposed to be ripped up, widened and straightened this summer.
The multimillion project was pushed back after unexpected problems and traffic delays dogged the first phase of the project.
Since last year, construction crews have been rebuilding Highway 2 from Thama to Wrenco Loop. The work and hour-long delays have drawn complaints from businesses and travelers.
“The project is progressing on schedule, however, the transportation board was concerned that the second phase of the project … would increase the traffic congestion in the area,” said District Engineer Tom Baker.
Bids for the second project will not be opened until October. Baker also said environmental and traffic control plans will be in place before construction begins on the second phase. Some erosion and traffic control measures were overlooked on the first project.
