Ruth Jersey Swiped
It’s a tale of murder, mystery and memorabilia, with the great Babe Ruth right in the middle.
A vintage New York Yankees uniform, supposedly worn by the Bambino during the 1924 season and valued at $50,000, was swiped from the trunk of a rental car parked on a midtown Manhattan street in New York.
What the uniform’s new owner didn’t know was that this outfit comes with a history. The off-white flannel shirt and the pants with wide navy pinstripes were previously owned by a Hollywood company, a mob hit victim and a Long Island police department.
The uniform and a $200,000 collection of baseball cards were taken from a vehicle, said police spokesman Doram Tamari.
In Durham, N.C., a record $6,000 in fines and 124 games of suspensions were levied in the aftermath of a benchemptying brawl during a Carolina League game between Winston-Salem and Durham.
Durham relief pitcher Earl Nelson, who was videotaped kicking Winston-Salem Warthogs pitcher Glen Cullop in the head during the fight, was fined $300 and suspended for six games, the WinstonSalem Journal and The Herald-Sun of Durham reported.
