Trends, Circulation Set On Evening Sun
The Evening Sun, the newspaper where H.L. Mencken applied his lacerating wit to American life and manners, is closing after 85 years.
The newspaper will cease publication on Sept. 15, a victim of declining circulation and readers’ preference for morning papers, Mary Junck, chief executive and publisher of the Baltimore Sun Co., said Thursday.
The closing leaves Baltimore with only one major daily, The Sun, a morning newspaper. The Sun and The Evening Sun merged staffs three years ago.
At least 50 of the 1,700 jobs at the Baltimore Sun Co. will be eliminated because of the closing, the company said. A revamped, fatter morning paper will debut after the shutdown.
Both papers are owned by Times Mirror Co.
