Wounded Lioness Injures 13 In City

Compiled From Wire Services

A desert lioness wounded by police wandered into a southern Egyptian city looking for food and injured 13 people before being captured.

Police used loudspeakers to warn residents of Mallawi to stay indoors while they tried to capture the animal Wednesday. Police finally wounded the lioness and took her to Cairo for treatment. The victims suffered minor injuries.

Police shot the animal while searching for Muslim extremists in the hills near the town, a traditional habitat for Egypt’s lions.

Mallawi, 160 miles south of Cairo, is one of the main sites of clashes between police and militants seeking to overthrow the government.
