Nhl Looks To Europe

Compiled From Wire Services

The NHL is looking to establish two new hockey leagues in Europe - an elite league and a lower-caliber league.

The proposals are outlined in a discussion paper the NHL assembled for a committee it has established with the International Ice Hockey Federation, the sport’s governing body.

The paper recommends the NHL and IIHF form an elite league that would be on par with top domestic leagues in Sweden, Finland and Russia and would play interlocking games with the top leagues.

A second league, a so-called expansion model, would feature a lower standard of competition and would operate in non-traditional hockey markets.

Among cities under consideration are Barcelona, Spain; Dortmund and Munich in Germany; London and Manchester in England; Milan, Italy; and Paris.
