Accused Killer Claims He Has Amnesia

From Staff And Wire Reports

The man accused of killing two members of a rural family and injuring two others is claiming amnesia, the Custer County sheriff said Tuesday.

Sheriff Tony Harbaugh said he did not know more about the assertion by Carl Sidney Race, 49, accused of shooting four members of a family on Oct. 21, pouring kerosene over them and setting their house afire.

Race, arrested Saturday on a beach at Corpus Christi, Texas, is charged with two counts of murder, two counts of attempted murder and one count of arson. He faces other charges of violent attacks in Washington and Michigan.

Harbaugh said federal marshals are expected to transport Race to Montana.

The sheriff said his investigation of the shootings and fire at the home in Kinsey, about 20 miles east of Miles City, is largely complete.

Kinsey Postmistress Reta Wyman and her 28-year-old son, Paul, died in the attack. Her husband, Claude Wyman, and another son, Jeff, 32, suffered gunshot wounds and burns.

Claude Wyman is at Holy Rosary Hospital in Miles City, has been taken off the critical list and was able to attend funeral services Monday, participating mostly from a wheelchair, the sheriff said. Jeff Wyman remains in critical condition at a Salt Lake City burn center.

Reta Wyman was Race’s sisterin-law.
