Abc Barely Wins Ratings Contest
ABC, with two World Series telecasts, “NFL Monday Night Football” and the season premiere of “NYPD Blue,” edged NBC in last week’s primetime Nielsen ratings.
ABC placed six shows in the Top 10 and won five nights, including a seventh-place finish for “NYPD Blue,” Steven Bochco’s adult police drama.
NBC’s World Series baseball telecasts ranked second and fourth, and its hospital drama “ER” ranked No. 5 as the week’s highest-rated series, just one-tenth of a ratings point ahead of ABC’s “Home Improvement.”
For the week of Oct. 23-29, ABC had a 14.0 rating and a 23 percent share of the TV audience. NBC was just two-tenths of a point back, with a 13.8 rating, 22 share.
CBS was well off the pace, with a 8.7 rating, 14 share.
The Fox Broadcasting Co., airing 15 hours of prime-time programs, managed a 7.3 rating, 12 share.
ABC’s top-ranked “World News Tonight” earned a 9.1 rating, 19 share, its 164th victory in the past 165 weeks. “NBC Nightly News” averaged an 8.1 rating, 17 share, and “CBS Evening News” was third with a 7.4 rating, 15 share.
