Former State Titlists Shine Wilbur-Creston, Odessa Roll In District 7-B Volleyball Play
The teams that have won the last eight State B championships dominated first-day play at the District 7-B volleyball tournament in Springdale.
Defending state champion Wilbur-Creston and 1989-92 state champ Odessa won twice on Thursday to advance to Saturday’s title match.
The championship match will determine the top two seeds to the Nov. 10-11 state tournament at Eastern Washington University.
The Bi-County League’s other two district entries, ‘93 state champ Davenport and ‘87-‘88 state champ Reardan, are still in the running for the other two berths.
Prior to Saturday’s title match, Reardan will play Inchelium and Davenport will meet Springdale in loser-out, winner-to-state matches. Those winners will play for third and fourth seeds to state.
The Panorama League took it on the chin Thursday, losing all four openers and dropping in to loser-out matches.
The host Chargers, seeded third from the Panorama, pulled rank by beating and eliminating, top-seeded Northwest Christian 15-12, 15-11. Last year, NWC became only the second Panorama team (the first since Cusick in ‘85) to play at state.
Second-seeded Inchelium beat fourth-seeded Republic 15-7, 15-13 in the other loser-out match.
In the day’s best competition, a semifinal, fourth-seeded Odessa topped No. 2 Reardan 15-9, 9-15, 15-6 in the lone match to go more than two games. Lindsay Schorzman had 15 kills, Lanae Jeske 14 kills, Marci Smith 22 digs and Kori Walter 40 assists for Odessa.
In a rematch of last year’s district title game, top-seeded and undefeated W-C stopped third-seeded Davenport 15-10, 15-11 in a semifinal. Jessica Martin had 11 kills and Mindy Bandy six kills for the winning Wildcats.
Saturday’s matches begin at 2 p.m., with Reardan vs. Inchelium. Davenport and Springdale play 20 minutes after that match, at approximately 3:15. The championship will be 20 minutes after the second match, at about 4:30. The final match, for third and fourth seeding, is scheduled for 5:45.
