John d’Urbal Spokane

Vigil service for John A. d’Urbal, a former newspaper reporter, is set for 7 p.m. today at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Augustine’s Catholic Church. Burial service will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery chapel.

Mr. d’Urbal, who was born in Canada, came to Spokane with his family in 1905.

He died Wednesday. He was 90.

He graduated from Lewis and Clark High School and received a bachelor of arts degree in journalism from Gonzaga University. He later received a master’s degree in French from the University of Washington.

During World War II he served as a captain in the 8th Air Force in London.

He was employed at The Spokesman-Review for 40 years and held positions of sports and news reporter, copy editor and Northwest editor.

He was considered a French language expert and was a reference source for newspaper staff members regarding the French language.

Following his retirement in 1970, he became the managing editor of Signum, the alumni newspaper of Gonzaga University. He left that position in 1984.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Isabel.

Minnie Johnson Spokane

Visitation for Minnie Johnson, 83, will be from 11 a.m. to noon Monday at Calvary Baptist Church. Service will follow at noon at the church. Burial will be at Spokane Memorial Gardens. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Johnson, who was born in Crescent, Okla., died Thursday.

She had lived in Spokane since 1944 and had done domestic work in individual homes.

She was a member of the Eastside Senior Citizens and Calvary Baptist Church Mother Board.

Her husband, I.C. Johnson, died in 1969.

She is survived by one brother, Jimmy Neal of Los Angeles.
