Hat Trick Helps Zags Beat Lmu
Gonzaga University got a pure hat trick from Jeff McAllister and two goals from Octavio Dovalle as the Bulldogs set a school record for goals in a 6-0 whitewash of Loyola Marymount Sunday in a West Coast Conference men’s soccer match at GU’s Martin Field in Spokane.
McAllister’s first goal came at 31:26 to give the Bulldogs (1-4-1 WCC, 3-10-2 overall) a 1-0 halftime lead, taking a pass from Coby Carlson and scoring from the 6-yard box. His second goal came at 70:00 and started Gonzaga on a 4-0 spurt in 10:20 to break the game open. He completed the pure hat trick, the first-ever by a Gonzaga player, at 72:28 as he broke in all alone on the right side beat LMU keeper Chris Walter to the lower right side.
Women’s soccer
Despite Haley Nichol’s goal three minutes into the game, the Whitworth Pirates were eliminated from an automatic berth to the NAIA national tournament as the host Willamette Bearcats scored all three of its goals in the second half for a 3-1 win.
The Pirates still have a chance to get an at-large berth to the tournament with its 13-6-2 overall record.
Junior goalkeeper Tina Thompson recorded her sixth shutout of the season as the Washington Huskies (4-3 Pac-10, 11-7 overall) positioned themselves for a second straight trip to the NCAA Tournament with a 1-0 win over host Washington State (1-6, 4-13-1) at Pullman.
Both teams were knotted 0-0 until junior Erin Saltzman took a lead pass from senior Tara Bilanski and while sliding, was able to slip a shot from six yards past Cougar freshman goalkeeper Jessica Glazer at 76:00.
Saint Mary’s College scored three unanswered goals to overcome a brief Gonzaga lead for a 3-1 West Coast Conference women’s soccer victory at GU’s Martin Field, the final match of the season for the Bulldogs.
Megan Troy scored at the 75-minute mark as the Community Colleges of Spokane salvaged a 3-3 tie with Tacoma in a NWAACC league match in Ellensburg.
