Write Up Your Alley

Two deadlines are closing in for area teen writers.

For those who like cold, hard facts, there’s the Read & React contest, sponsored by The SpokesmanReview and Parade Magazine. Your task: Write a 250-word editorial opinion on an issue you’ve read about in the newspaper. Your reward: The winner gets a trip to Spain with 150 other winners from across the country.

For complete rules and an entry form, contact your school counselor or any Spokesman-Review office. The deadline is Dec. 5.

If your talents run more toward the creative side, consider Our Generation’s Creative Writing Page. We’re looking for teens’ poems and short stories to run in our Dec. 20 issue. The deadline is Dec. 1. Here are the rules:

1. You must be between 13 and 19 years of age.

2. Entries can be poems or short stories of no more than 1,000 words. You may also include drawings or artwork (yours or a friend’s) to accompany your piece.

3. Only one entry per person.

4. Mail a copy of your work to Our Generation, Get Creative, 999 W. Riverside, Spokane, WA 99210-1615. Include your name, age, school, address and phone number. Entries can’t be returned.

Call 459-5456 if you have questions.
