Eastern Center Lewis Suspended
Center Melvin Lewis has been suspended from the Eastern Washington basketball team while the university and NCAA separately investigate the validity of credits Lewis earned in junior college.
Lewis, who transferred from College of the Sequoias in California before last season, continues to practice with the team. He will not play in any games until EWU or the NCAA is assured of his eligibility.
“We will move as quickly as possible,” said EWU athletic director John Johnson.
Lewis could be reinstated without NCAA approval if EWU determines Lewis to be eligible first.
EWU plays an exhibition tonight at Reese Court, opening the season Nov. 26 at Washington State.
“I’m just waiting,” said first-year EWU coach Steve Aggers. “It’s been a distraction for Melvin.”
The 6-foot-8 Lewis averaged 17.0 points and 10.5 rebounds in the Eagles’ final 11 games last season.
